What we do on Rainy Fun Days

For the past month, hubby has been working every Sunday...
We haven't had a "Fun Day" in a very long time. 

This Sunday he actually didn't work! Wahoo!!
 It was raining, so we headed to the Portland Children's Museum. 

The kids always have a blast there!

This 16 oz bottle makes 48 gallons of safe and effective all purpose cleaner. You just add water to the spray bottles and a couple of drops of the cleaner.

One 16 oz bottle of degreaser costs 17 cents to make!
I use this on my range, backsplash, hood and to wipe off all of the oil splatters when I am cooking. 

All-purpose cleaner:

I use this to wipe the dining table, chairs, counters, doors and appliances. 

Window Cleaner:
One 16 oz bottle of window cleaner costs 1 cent to make!
This is where I was most skeptical, I was afraid of streaky mirrors and windows, but this does as great of a job as windex without the harmful chemicals. 

I use this on my mirrors, windows, bathroom vanities, and most important my very finicky dishwasher.

I don't know what it is about this dishwasher, but it only gets streak free with windex, and the shaklee window cleaner did an amazing job!

So clean! You can see the reflection of the cabinets.

Stuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey

I really like stuffed bell peppers, and I have always made them with ground beef, this time I only had ground turkey and decided to try something new. 
And guess what? We all loved them!
I wanted to write down the this recipe before I forget what I put in it. Take a look at the pics and tell me it doesn't look good?

1-2 tb of olive oil (or more as needed)
1 lb ground turkey
3-4 garlic cloves (minced)
1 medium red onion (chopped)
1 cup roasted corn kernels (you can toast a can of corn in a skillet):

1 cup of cooked rice (I used basmati)
smoked paprika (to taste)
salt and pepper, to taste
2-3 TB fresh chopped parsley

To assemble:

Preheat oven to 375

Put olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and cook the ground turkey till browned.
 Add a dash more olive oil, add the chopped garlic, onion, roasted corn:

Saute until nicely browned

Add the cooked rice and mix together.

Add more olive oil if you need to moisten it. 
Add the spices and salt/pepper and 1/2 of the chopped parsley.

Remove from heat.

Choose a shallow baking dish that will fit the halved peppers.
Stuff the halved peppers with the mixture, pressing in firmly, use as much stuffing as you can. 

Place the bell peppers in a baking dish:

Pour about 1/2 cup of hot water in the bottom of the baking dish.
Cover loosely  with foil and bake for 30-45 minutes, until bell peppers  are tender.

Once done, garnish with chopped parsley...


Mushroom Bruschetta

I was at a friends house for dinner and she had made the most delicious mushroom spread. I could not stop eating it! The whole time I was eating it I kept thinking "how come I have never tried this before" And my husband loved it too! If you like mushrooms, you will love this too!

As soon as I could, I made some myself. Although I still feel like I have been missing out all of these years, not knowing about this delicious mushroom bruschetta... But at least now  can make it anytime I want and share it with my wonderful friends

So I am going to show you how to make this delicious mushroom spread:

First thing you need is to cook the mushrooms. I drizzled mine with olive oil and sprinkled some salt and pepper on them and baked at 350 until cooked through:

Next you need to mince your mushrooms. 
My friend used a food processor (but I don't have one, so I used my grinder)

Next, you need to drain the mushrooms:

After draining as much liquid from the mushrooms as you can, add 1/2 cup of Mayo, minced garlic, salt and pepper. Adjust seasoning until you get the flavor you like. 

Then serve on bread:


Shout Out for Natalya @ Mom's Dish

I want to give a quick shout out to Natalya @ Mom's Dish. Natalya is an amazing cook and has a wonderful website.

I have been browsing her website for a while now, pinning recipes that I plan on trying. 
I think the reason her food really appeals to me, is because she is also Russian and has all of these wonderful recipes which I can not wait to try!

I love Russian food, however I can not read in Russian so a Russian cook book is out of the question, which is why I get so excited when I run across a russian foodie blog. 

I love how she has step by step directions for recipes. 

For example, probably the most popular Russian Food is piroshky/ пирожки. 

She has step by step photos on what to do, in case you have never made piroshky before. 

Here is an example:
Make little balls out of the dough. Oil hands so dough doesn’t stick to your hands. Flatten out dough and place filling inside. Flatten out meat across the dough. Fold over the sides and pinch the edges together to seal the dough. Once its sealed tight, flatten out dough into round Piroshok.

Master Bedroom Curtains

As some of you may know, I have just finished remodeling my master bathroom and have moved towards our Master Bedroom, slowly but surely it is coming around. 

 I had trouble finding curtains that I loved. I had something in my head, however I couldn't find anything I liked at the store or online. Don't you hate it when that happens?

So I decided to make the curtains. Well Semi-home made :)

Here they are:

First off, I am going to apologize for the quality photos, I was working on these curtains at night while the kidos were in bed, so the lighting is horrid! 

To start you need two solid curtain panels. 

If you have an IKEA near you, I suggest checking them out.

 I bought two panels at IKEA for only $24.99! 

Then I needed ribbon. 

I needed 20 yards of ribbon for both of my panels. 

I bought my ribbon at Walmart ($3.79 for 10 yards)

First I worked out a pattern I liked:

Then I cut all of my ribbon to size and melted the edges to prevent fraying:

I used two of these heat & bond tape:

I laid out all of the ribbon and used the Heat & Bond to attach to the curtain:

The curtain grommets were silver, which is not the look I was going for. So I used my gold metallic paint and a tiny paintbrush:

Here they are, I have to say I love them!

Can't beat them for the price!

Pumpkin Bars

I roasted a pumpkin and was debating on what to do with it. 
My friend made some delicious pumpkin bars which were amazing and I have been meaning to make some too. 


4 eggs
1 2/3 cups granulated sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
15-ounce can pumpkin Or 15 OZ of cooked pureed pumpkin
2 cups sifted all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract


Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 
Using an electric mixer at medium speed, combine the eggs, sugar, oil and pumpkin until light and fluffy. 
Stir together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and baking soda.
Add the dry ingredients to the pumpkin mixture and mix at low speed until thoroughly combined and the batter is smooth. 
Spread the batter into a greased 13x10 inch baking pan.  Bake for 30 minutes. 
Let cool completely before frosting. 
Cut into bars.
To make the icing:

Combine the cream cheese and butter in a medium bowl with an electric mixer until smooth.  Add the sugar and mix at low speed until combined.  Stir in the vanilla and mix again. 
Spread on cooled pumpkin bars.

The herbal smell is amazing! Reminds me of lavender oil. I used it a few times on my hands already, and I have to say I like it. I put it next to my bed and rub it into my hands before bed. It is a very relaxing scent.

This was a nice little treat.
I love LUNA bars, and so do my kids. I try to have one in my purse at all times.
I enjoyed this one. Well, the few bites I could take before my Little Man took it from me and devoured it in minutes.

Russian Vareniki

Hello my beautiful friends! 

Today I am going to show you how I make Russian Vareniki. They are cooked dumplings filled with potatoes and caramelized onions.

This is something I LOVE. I remember my mom getting my sisters and me together to help her make these. I remember us talking and laughing while making a whole bunch of vareniki, and I mean alot! We had a family of 9!

They may take a while to make, but oh so worth it!
I wish I could share a plate with you, but for now,  a picture will have to do

I will not lie, It takes me approximately 2 hours to make this for dinner. 
So, I usually choose  a slow afternoon where we have no plans. 

However, If you have someone who can help you (mom, sister, hubby, daughter or son) Then it won't take as long.
