Trying out My Glam Bag- August

You all know how much I love getting my Birch box every month, Well I decided to try out the My Glam Bag

It is basically the same thing as birch box, but with my glam, there is no store and no option to review your items for points.

Every month your samples come in a different makeup bag, This months theme was Endless Summer:

Here are the items I got:

Lets take a closer look:

I am a big fan of skin care. I have seen this brand before, but never actually tried anything from the brand. I will definitely try both of these. When I use them up, I will have them in my used up products and let you know what I thought about them.

Andreas Choice Nailpolish. (available for purchase in Fall 2012)

Neon Orange is Not a color I would wear.   I think I will give this away to someone.

Roll on Perfume Oil be Dermeter. Prices $6-39

What the site says about this item:

Dragon Fruit is created with leafy green notes intertwined with juicy Dragon Fruit, citrus zest and soft floral and wood hints. Clean Skin is a blend of orange, lemon, white rose, bergamot peach and vanilla, making the perfect shower-fresh scent.

I am not a fan of this scent. It reminds me of some cheap body spray. It actually makes me feel nauseous and light headed.

Glama Zoid Eyeshadow by SALTY. Full size $4.95
This shadow is perfect for all skin tones and works as an amazing highlighter for brow bone and inner corners.

I am not a fan of loose eye shadows, I feel that they go all over the place and don't last very long.
I swatched this and I am not impressed :(. This is going in my give away bag.
My Glam Gloss. This was an extra in the bag.
I did not like this lip gloss. It felt sticky on the lips.

I couldn't stand it on my lips so I wiped it off on my towel, well after the wash there was still a stain on the towel from the lipgloss. I don't know if that is a good thing or not. I guess it is a long lasting gloss/stain, but I am not going to use this. Going into my give away bag. :(

So what is the verdict? I am  not impressed with this bag.
I only like 2 out of 6 items. I went ahead and canceled my subscription.

I felt that these are not high end samples, and not worth my $10.

Do you subscribe to My Glam? What are your thoughts?

Two done, one more to go!

We have updated two of our bathrooms, the half bath and the kids/guest bathroom
Now it is finally time to work on the last bathroom. Probably the most important bathroom to me: THE MASTER BATHROOM! We have a small house (1700 sq ft) so all of the bathrooms are tiny, including the master bathroom.

So without further ado, lets take a look with the space we are working with:

This is a tiny hallway in the master, which  leads to the bathroom and closet.
Wasted space, huh? We decided to tear down that wall and make this whole space into the bathroom:

The tiny bathroom with walk in shower:

August Birchbox

I received my Birchbox last week and just opened it yesterday!
We are remodeling, so everything from my room got moved to the guest room, and I just found it.

For those of you who still haven't heard of Birchbox, it is a beauty subscription that you pay $10 a month for. You get a cute little box filled with beauty samples!
Then you can review the products for points and use the points to shop for full size products in the Birchbox store! Pretty nifty, huh?

So lets take a look at my box:

Shick Hydro Razor. $10.00 (this already paid for the box!)
I was in desperate need of a new razor, so this was a great surprise.

Viva La Juicy Perfume sample. Full size 2.5 oz $70
The uplifting scent opens with a sparkling cascade of mandarin and wild berries. Next, sweet notes of honeysuckle, gardenia petals, and jasmine peek through, followed by a lingering trace of waterlily.

I thought this was a pleasant smell, it had a floral scent which I like. I am not sure if I would purchase it though, if you have seen my post on "what's on my perfume tray" then you know I tend to stick to the same perfume.

Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream. Full Size 1.25 oz $16.00
A dose of soothing camphor gives this light yellow cream its faint herbal scent, which fades quickly upon contact with your skin. High concentrations of glycerin and sodium hyaluronate seal in moisture and protect skin from the elements. Finally, vitamins B, C, and E infuse skin with antioxidants and boost firmness. The thick, creamy consistency makes this an ideal hand cream, foot cream, lip balm, and facial moisturizer—or you can use it to soften rough elbows and knees. You’ll be amazed by how quickly it absorbs into your skin without leaving a greasy feeling behind.

This reminds me of the Burt's Bees Balm. It is pretty thick, so you need to warm it up between your fingers to spread easily.
My face was in desperate need of intense moisture after using my Retin A cream, I put this on during the night and was pleasantly surprised. It did a great job.  However,  I don't think I am going repurchase, since I like to use my Burt's Bees Farmers Friend on all dry patches on my body, including face!

***I put this on my lips as a lip balm and almost gagged when I licked my lips. It is disgusting. I wouldn't recommend using it as a lip balm.

Stila Stay all day Foundation. Full size $44
Both the foundation and concealer are made with oxygen technology that naturally increases blood flow to the skin’s surface, resulting in a radiant glow. The foundation’s oil-free formula feels comfy on skin all day, while the full-coverage concealer blends easily to give you a seamless finish.

I love trying out new foundation. Since I have oily skin, with hyper-pigmentation I an always looking for something which will work better then the last thing. Which is why I am always picking up samples and trying out new foundation.
This is actually one of the foundations that I have been meaning to try. Most of Stila's makeup is non comedogenic which is great for my super sensitive face.

I will give it a go, who knows, I may be purchasing another foundation soon :)

Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream. Full size $20
A moisturizing base of omega-rich squalene, organic shea butter, jojoba oil, and coconut oil protects against the redness and irritation associated with shaving, while organic green tea extracts infuse skin with antioxidants.

I don't use shaving cream to shave. I just use body wash, so I can't imagine paying $20 for shaving cream, not unless it does the job for me and shaves my legs by itself.

Well that wraps up my birchbox.

What did you get this month? If you have a blog post, please link it up. I would love to check it out

Fun in the sun!

We have been so busy this summer, we just realized it is mid August and we haven't even gone to the beach yet.

Hubby came home last night and said "lets go to the beach tomorrow"
and being a stay at home mom means I can go! No planning in advance (no calling in sick)
We just packed up and left in the morning. I felt so spontaneous (I never do things like this, I am a big planner)

We are fortunate enough to live near the beautiful Oregon Coast
It is a bit of a drive, but the scenery is beautiful and a DVD kept the kids entertained.

It was a beautiful sunny day and we had a wonderful time.

Daddy even took a nap....

We ate lunch at the pelican Pub

My personal pizza with portabella mushrooms and feta cheese

Little Em digging into the ice cream sandwich dessert

Little man fell asleep (poor boo was tired)

That was our lovely day at the beach.

Do you have a beach you visit frequently?

Two bathrooms down, one more to go :)

Chicken Noodle Soup

The kidos have been sick recently, which means I have been making our favorite chicken noodle soup. This recipe is from Food Network, although I have changed a few things, here it goes:

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 medium carrots, cut diagonally into 1/2-inch-thick slices
  • 2 celery ribs, halved lengthwise, and cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices
  • 4 fresh thyme sprigs
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 quarts chicken stock, recipe follows
  • 8 ounces dried wide egg noodles
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 handful fresh parsley, finely chopped

Directions

Place a soup pot over medium heat and coat with the oil. Add the onion, garlic, carrots, celery, thyme and bay leaf. Cook and stir for about 6 minutes, until the vegetables are softened but not browned. Pour in the chicken stock and bring the liquid to a boil. Add the noodles and simmer for 5 minutes until tender. Fold in the chicken, and continue to simmer for another couple of minutes to heat through; season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving.

Chicken Stock:

  • 1 whole chicken (about 3 1/2 pounds), rinsed, giblets discarded
  • 2 carrots, cut in large chunks
  • 3 celery stalks, cut in large chunks
  • 2 large white onions, quartered
  • 1 head of garlic, halved
  • 1/4 bunch fresh thyme
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
Place the chicken and vegetables in a large stockpot over medium heat. Pour in only enough cold water to cover (about 3 quarts); too much will make the broth taste weak. Toss in the thyme, bay leaves, and peppercorns, and allow it to slowly come to a boil. Lower the heat to medium-low and gently simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, partially covered, until the chicken is done. As it cooks, skim any impurities that rise to the surface; add a little more water if necessary to keep the chicken covered while simmering.
Carefully remove the chicken to a cutting board. When its cool enough to handle, discard the skin and bones; hand-shred the meat into a storage container.
Carefully strain the stock through a fine sieve into another pot to remove the vegetable solids. Use the stock immediately or if you plan on storing it, place the pot in a sink full of ice water and stir to cool down the stock. Cover and refrigerate for up to one week or freeze.

bathroom progress...

Our bathroom is coming along nicely!
I just wanted to share a few pics so you guys can see which direction we went

Here is the original post.

The before picture:

We got the new tile flooring installed
Then we did the beadboard and painted everything:

New fan, toilet, light fixture and cabinet installed:

After the hubby moved the plumbing pipes we were able to put the drawers in.
The drawers are amazing at organizing everything!

That is it so far, we still have a lot of things to do,
I can't wait to share the finished bathroom with you!

Turkey Meatloaf

We love turkey meatloaf in our house. It tastes delicious and is a great comfort food.
This is my go to recipe. If you never tried it, I suggest you do :)

Ingredients:

1/2 cup of chopped onion
olive oil
1 lb lean ground turkey
1/2 cup of oatmeal
1/4 cup and 2 TB of ketchup  (the good stuff, our favorite is the Portland Organic Ketchup)
2 tsp worcestershire sauce
1 egg
1 tsp marjoram
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350. Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray
Saute the chopped onion in the olive oil, until translucent.

In a medium bowl, mix the turkey, sautéed onion, oatmeal, egg, ketchup, salt/pepper, marjoram.

Shape into a loaf in a loaf pan.

In a small bowl, mix the remaining 2 TB of ketchup with worcestershire sauce and brush onto the loaf to give it a nice glaze.

Bake uncovered for 40 minutes at 350.
Here is what it should look like when it is done:

After baking let it sit 5-10 minutes before slicing.

ENJOY!

Empties (short reviews)

My "empties" box filled up again, so I decided to quickly review them and throw them in the recycling.

For the hair:

I have been searching for the perfect sulfate/paraben free shampoo for a few months now, I decided to try the Burt's Bees Super Shiny Shampoo and Conditioner. I didn't love it- it left my hair very dry, even after the conditioner. Will not repurchase.
Tresemme curl activator spray/heat protectant, This was alright, but I will not be buying it again. I don't think it did anything to activate curls, I just used it as a heat protectant. After trying different heat protectants, I can say that this one left my hair feel heavy and sticky.
Aussie 3 minute miracle While using the Burt's Bees shampoo/conditioner, my hair was very dry. So I went on a search for a heavy conditioner.
I really liked this deep conditioner, it is quick (usually deep conditioners come in a form of a mask you leave on for 30-45 minutes) and It gave me extra conditioning I needed.
 I have already repurchased it.

For the face:

Crest 3D white strips Loved these! They stay on great, It was nice to have white teeth! I hate that they are so expensive. Will repurchase again.
Acnevire acne gel. This stuff works great. It has sulfur in it. It somehow tightens my skin and reduces redness. Will repurchase
Purity face wash. This works wonderfully to remove makeup. I just use a pea size amount and rub all over my face (including eyes) then rinse off and proceed with my face wash. Already repurchased.
kiehls spot gel. This stuff is good, but nothing I will run back to the store for. I don't think it is worth $18, it works just as good as any spot treatment for the drugstore. Will not be repurchasing
Makeup Forever Matte Velvet plus foundation. LOVE LOVE LOVE this foundation. It covers my hyper-pigmentation and stays matte for a few hours (I have a very oily t zone)
I have repurchased again.

Thats my used up products for now.
Have you used any of these? What do you think?
